<strong>The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says it is set for the conduct of its newly introduced January/February West African Senior School certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates.</strong></div>

The council’s Head, National Office (HNO) Mr Olu Adenipekun said the examination will take place in major cities across the country this year from January 29 to February 12.</div>

“We are fully ready to go. This examination is the first of its kind in the country for private candidates only, and is to be administered for now only in major cities and towns.</div>

“The result of this examination might likely be released within 30 days, and once we are able to do that, then we will be free to go into the main examination, which will now be the conduct of the May/June WASSCE for school candidates.</div>

“After this, we then also have the opportunity to prepare also for the conduct of the second series of the WASSCE for private candidates in August, popularly known as November/December WASSCE.</div>

“So, in a nut shell, we are fully prepared to win over the confidence of the general public, especially the Nigerian children, to the fact that they have an examination body that is ready and prepared to meet their academic needs,’’ he told NAN.</div>

Adenipekun said the new arrangement was to ensure that those who are unable to pass were given the opportunity to get better prepared and try again.</div>

Ekiti State Government have now made matters worse by not having a peaceful negotiation with ASUU some days back. Speaking with Corporate Press, a lecturer noted that lecturers are been paid half salary since last year due to the fact that there have been deductions of Cooperative arrears and Pension Funds from their salaries without remitting the deducted amounts to the Cooperative and Pension Fund Administration respectively, and also the increment of tax by government which is not encouraging.</div>

ASUU have now demanded that the government remits both Salary and Cooperative up to date (December), whereby the last payment for the Cooperative was April and Net Salary was in October. They also demanded the reversal of their tax funds and that the percentage of pension funds deducted from their salary should not be deducted any longer since the funds are not been remitted to the Pension Board.</div>

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Edward Pwajok (Plateau-APC) seeks to address the issue of indigenship of married women in the country. Leading the debate, Pwajok said the extant law was discriminatory against women as a man’s indegenship was never questioned even when he married many wives.</div>

The lawmaker said married women had been subjected to psychological trauma on the legal uncertainty of their indigenous identity in the country.</div>

He added that upon marriage, women’s status remained unclear as to whether they were indigenes of their father’s or husband’s homeland.</div>

According to him, women in public service are usually confronted with the dilemma during promotion into directorate cadre.</div>

“We are witnesses to how the promotion of a female justice was delayed on account of indigenship,” he said. Pwajok said there had been several efforts, including an attempt to alter the constitution to resolve the situation but did not succeed.</div>

The legislator said the culture could be patriarchal but democracy and civilisation should give married women the option of choosing where to belong to.</div>

He noted that if the bill was passed into law, the National Assembly would have solved the problem without altering the constitution.</div>

He argued that once a woman got married to a man, the two had become one and should share in the origin of the man as presently constituted.</div>

Benue governor, Samuel Ortom, whose state has suffered the latest bout of bloodletting, said two weeks ago that he informed the federal government of planned attacks by herdsmen, yet the state received no protection.</div>

In its latest reaction Thursday, the government did not blame the attackers responsible for at least 72 deaths this year. It said the decision of some states to enact laws to stop open grazing triggered the violence.</div>

It also said the “remote” cause of the violence was the violation of areas demarcated over the years as grazing reserves.</div>

Benue, Taraba and Ekiti are some of the states where the anti-open grazing law has taken effect.<br />The laws were enacted after several states suffered deadly violence often blamed on herdsmen.</div>

Hundreds of Nigerians were killed in the first two days of this year in some of these clashes in Benue and Taraba states.<br />The Benue State government organised a mass burial on January 12 for 72 of the victims of the killings in Logo and Guma local government areas of the state.</div>

Speaking on the plans by the federal government to check the deadly clashes between farmers and herders, the Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, said the anti-open grazing law sparked off the clashes.</div>

Mr. Dan-Ali, who was briefing State House correspondents at the end of a meeting of security chiefs with President Muhammadu Buhari, urged Nigerians to learn to accept foreigners in their areas.</div>

He also said it is illegal for state governments to set up and arm forest guards.</div>

“Cattle rearers are all over the nation, you go to Bayelsa, you see them, you go to Ogun, you see them. If those routes are blocked, what happens? These people are Nigerians, it’s just like you going to block river or shoreline, does that make sense to you?</div>

“These are the remote causes. But what are the immediate causes? It is the grazing law. These people are Nigerians, we must learn to live together with each other, that is basic.<br />“Communities and other people must learn how to accept foreigners within their enclave, finish!” he said.</div>

Mr. Dan-Ali faulted the decision by some states to set up and arm forest guards, saying it is illegal.<br />He said fully armed militia were arrested in some states, adding that killings were from all sides.</div>

To check the crisis, the minister said the quarterly security meeting with President Buhari decided to set up a commission on small arms proliferation in the country.<br />He said the decision was “in compliance with the presidential directive for the establishment of National Commission on the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons in the country.”</div>
